Spray Roses Facts

Spray roses refer to roses that grow with clusters of blooms on one stem or branch. Unlike long-stem roses that produce one bloom per stem, these roses create a spray of smaller blooms and are typically sold as sweetheart roses at the florist. Spray roses can, however, be grown in a pot and are typically labeled as miniature roses.
Rose Variety.
Floribunda roses produce several blooms on a branched stem often referred to as a spray. These flowers are nestled tightly in a cluster. Each bud opens separately. The spray of roses often contains rose in various stages of maturity, from tight buds to fully open blooms.
Use.
Spray roses make up the bulk of small bouquets and corsages, with the foliage creating an attractive background for the brightly colored blooms. Sprays are ideal for small floral arrangements where larger roses may be overpowering. They add a touch of romance to any setting or event.
Bloom Type.
Like other roses, spray roses may be single, double or semi-double blooms. Single blooms have one layer of four to eight petals, while semi-double blooms have anywhere from eight to 25 petals. Double blooms may have up to 45 petals. Bloom color is similar to other roses, ranging from white and pink to deep red.
Size.
Spray roses typically have smaller blooms than other roses. Because the flowers are close together, a single spray resembles a small bouquet held together by thin stems that join a thicker main stem. Although there are exceptions, with some full-size floribunda roses forming a spray, generally, spray roses are prized for their miniature size and dainty cluster of blooms.
Potted Spray Roses
Spray roses grown in pots are often miniature roses. These roses get their name from the bloom size -- not the size of the plant. When transplanted to the garden, or grown in a large container, miniature roses often grow to heights of 12 to 36 inches.

Why Spray Roses are perfect in bouquets
Spray Roses have some special traits that make them ideally suited for the use in bouquets. First and foremost they grow multiple blooms per stem. That provides for a lush effect in mono or mixed bouquets. The blooms themselves are relatively small which add to an elegant touch in a bouquet and make them fit in with other flowers in mixed bouquets.
Considerations
If you’d like to give roses as a gift, but would prefer a potted option, miniature spray roses are an ideal choice. These can be maintained in a container or transplanted into the ground in many environments. Small spray rose bouquets are a more affordable choice than long-stemmed roses and can be both pretty and fragrant. In the garden, spray roses, like floribundas, produce more blooms than many other rosebushes.
